Best GPU Types for AI Inference: A Practical Guide

How to evaluate GPU classes for inference without treating a hardware name as a universal recommendation.

By Hostnot GPU ·

The best GPU class depends on what inference means in your application. An embedding encoder, a streaming language model, and a video generator exercise different parts of the system. Build a shortlist by modality and bottleneck, then benchmark the complete pipeline.

Match the accelerator to the job

Three useful hardware categories

Single-card development and bounded inference. A GeForce RTX 5090 has 32GB GDDR7 according to NVIDIA's product specifications. It is a candidate for models and pipelines that fit with headroom, but its Blackwell architecture still requires compatible framework binaries and extension kernels. A gaming score is not an inference result.

Capacity-focused data-center inference. A100 variants provide different memory budgets; H100 and H200 also differ by configuration. For example, NVIDIA lists 80GB for H100 SXM and 141GB for H200. These are useful capacity anchors, not a rule that every application should use the largest device. See the H100/H200 workload comparison.

Multi-GPU model serving. Select this when a supported model partition or throughput plan justifies the communication overhead. GPU count alone says nothing about bridge installation, switch topology, or inter-node networking. A multiple-GPU marketplace configuration describes devices inside one machine; a distributed cluster needs a separate design.

A shortlist worksheet

For each candidate record the exact GPU variant, available VRAM, CPU/RAM allocation, storage behavior, runtime image, required precision, and maximum supported input shape. Reject an option if a required operator is unsupported or the working set cannot fit under the chosen offload policy. Then measure one normal case, one maximum-size case, and a short burst of the expected traffic.

For embeddings, report useful documents and tokens processed rather than padded tokens. For images, count completed outputs meeting the specified dimensions and quality settings. For chat, separate input and output tokens; a long prompt and a long answer are not equivalent workloads. Compare cost per successful unit using the actual billed evaluation window, including startup and idle time, rather than a fixed public price assumption.

When a faster GPU does not help

Low GPU activity alongside saturated CPU cores suggests preprocessing or request handling. Long model startup may be storage or artifact download. High GPU activity with poor latency can indicate excessive batching rather than insufficient hardware. GPU utilization alone is not a percentage of peak compute performance. Use a controlled benchmark to identify which stage changes when you switch cards.

Use the GPU directory for current configurations and Marketplace documentation to interpret an offering. If your application only needs a hosted model endpoint, check live model discovery before choosing an infrastructure class. Catalog membership and modality support must be confirmed at selection time.
